Description: As a research project shared between the Technische Universitaet Berlin and the Bauhaus-Universitaet Weimar, the Graduate Research Group "Identity and Heritage" engages in critical exploration of identity and heritage constructions based on monuments, historical places and other, mainly material cultural traditions.

Central to this project is the relationship between the need for community affirmation and the appropriation of cultural heritage as mobilized within the politics of history and identity. An additional perspective is the critical historicisation of the overall concept of identity construction as based on heritage within national and other inclusively/exclusively defined social and political groups. Also included are new approaches for overcoming or transforming the same in supranational and trans-societal constellations.

The objects of study are to be understood as changeable vehicles for the bonds between heirs and inheritance, as also transformed by time, space and society. The ability to recognize and interpret historical materials, designs and meanings is indispensable to the connection between the contemporary process of negotiation and its material and historical foundation. The goal of the Graduate Research Group is to develop a model for interdisciplinary cultural heritage research and critique that combines the approach of participatory and democratic heritage interpretation with close reading and interpretation of the material properties of the objects themselves.

Fields of study are: cultural heritage and the promise of stability; participation and heritage; heritage loss, rejection and destruction; the identity of places/constructions and reconstructions; commercialisation and tourist marketing; site management; new actor constellations. Possibility to attain a doctorate.

Requirements: A university degree (Diploma, Master or equivalent) in one of the disciplines represented in the graduate colloquium: Architecture, Theory of Architecture, Art and Architectural History, Building and Urban Design History, Cultural and Media History, Heritage Preservation, Landscape Architecture and Planning, Spatial Planning and Spatial Research, Planning and Architectural Sociology, Urban and Regional Sociology, Urban Planning, Visual Arts.
