Background:

For most museums around the world, caring for - and ensuring the accessibility of - collections in storage is a major challenge. Small museums are particularly vulnerable, because of their limited resources and access to expertise. On the other hand, small museums are resourceful, well connected, and powerful voices in their community. This makes them very influential and ideally positioned to have a positive impact on the wellbeing of collections and their sustainable use. After all, most museums in your country are small.

Reconnecting with Collections in Storage The RE-ORG ExperienceIn 2011, ICCROM and UNESCO created "RE-ORG" (www.re-org.info), a step-by-step holistic approach to help small museums reorganize their storage areas. Five years later, RE-ORG has been visited nearly 80,000 times and 13 RE-ORG training projects have been implemented in 9 countries all over the world. In addition, national institutes such as the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Belgium, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) in Canada and the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade (CIK) have taken on the responsibility of guiding museums in their respective countries through the application of the RE-ORG methodology. A strong professional community that possesses the skills and experience to address this challenge is growing worldwide. Museums are rediscovering collections in storage and are launching initiatives to allow their community to reconnect with their heritage.

In September 2016, the participants of RE-ORG Belgium will have completed their reorganization projects and will convene to share their results. This is an opportunity to invite professionals from around the world to take part in this exchange of experiences.

Description of the Seminar:

Reconnecting with Collections in Storage The RE-ORG ExperienceThis seminar will feature presentations by the participating museums of the RE-ORG Belgium initiative, as well as of the other RE-ORG projects worldwide. The talks will focus on collections of various types and sizes. We will discuss different practical solutions for when space is limited, when objects are scattered, when storage furniture can be reused or adapted. Special emphasis will be placed on the meaningful outcomes of reorganized storage for communities and on the various ways in which these projects were communicated to the public. The program will include a poster session, videos and special guided tours in some newly reorganized museum storage facilities in the Brussels area.

How to Register:

To register for the seminar, please fill in this form. Payment information will follow with the registration confirmation.

With your registration, we kindly ask you to contribute to RE-ORG Collection Storage Tips & Tricks, a growing resource for cost-effective storage ideas. Send a photo of the most creative, inventive and innovative storage solution you have come across. For example, this could be an idea for a storage unit or housing that is adapted to non-standard objects or spaces, or a custom solution for a space problem. Include a caption for your image that describes what it is and the problem it addresses (one to two sentences). Often, simple, low-cost ideas that use locally available materials are the best.

Note: If the image is not your own, ensure that you have obtained all necessary permissions from the copyright owner before sending it. By sending your picture, you agree for us to share it on RE-ORG Collection Storage Tips & Tricks.
