Workshop of Digital Manufacturing for Cultural Heritage


The techniques of digital fabrication have opened new horizons in the field of Cultural Heritage, offering new and original solutions for the study, protection and promotion of cultural heritage.

During the workshop we will discuss hardware and open source software and low cost for the three-dimensional relief and reproduction of objects of historical, artistic, exploring its possible applications in the field of restoration, of  accessibility museum, the dissemination and teaching.

Where: The workshop will turn in Rome at the FabLab SPQwoRk , Via Portonaccio 23B ( view map ) 
When: Saturday, 02/29 from 9 to 13 and from 14 to 17; Sunday, 03/01 from 10 to 13


Experience

None. The workshop is the basic level and open to anyone who wants to learn the whole process leading from the 3D survey of an object to its replication in 3D printing. You should bring a laptop.

Part 1 - The 3D survey with open source solutions and low-cost

Today we have many software solutions that allow you to get an accurate three-dimensional relief using only digital images . During the first part of the workshop will experience different open source software and low-cost, by addressing the theoretical and practical aspects through practical exercises:  the aim is to show the whole process leading to a real object corresponding to the digital 3D model.

Topics Covered : Image-based relief, Structure-from-Motion, mesh processing, texture mapping software used : Python Photogrammetry Toolbox, VisualSFM, Arc3D, 123D Catch, Agisoft PhotoScan (Standard Edition), MeshLab


Part 2 - Practical Applications

During the second part of the workshop will show some practical solutions for manufacturing digital restoration , the ' accessibility museum , the disclosure and teaching in the field of Cultural Heritage. 
The aim is to show the process that leads from the 3D digital model, developed during the first part of the course, to the corresponding replication in 3D printing and the possible practical applications.

All software will be installed and tested during the workshop, and at the end the teacher will distribute presentations and in-depth material on the topics covered, as well as all the data used for the exercises.

Everyone will be issued with a certificate of participation.

Giulio Bigliardi

Giulio Bigliardi deals with the training, and the dissemination of digital technologies in the field of cultural heritage online. In recent years the use of open source technologies applied to this sector has intensified. He specifically focuses on 3D relief, 3D printing and digital fabrication techniques .
