Preventive Conservation

This theme covers all aspects of preventive conservation which involves applying methods to reduce the risk of damage and deterioration while cultural heritage is being used.

Preventive conservation involves activities such as:

  • Monitoring the environment indoors for temperature and humidity which accelerate decay of organic materials;
  • Checking for pests which feed on organic materials;
  • Casing or boxing to protect from dust, light and to buffer changes in environmental conditions;
  • Training staff in correct handling practices to minimize damage;
  • Packing and transporting cultural heritage safely;
  • Monitoring light levels for material on display to reduce fading of pigments and inks;
  • Providing advice on standards for care of collections, for example in designing new storage facilities;
  • Emergency preparedness, knowing how to react in the event of a disaster such as a flood or fire that can threaten cultural heritage.
